Years ago, a lecture participant mentioned that one of the blocks in my "Another Round of Oompah" book looked a bit like a bat flying. She wasn't wrong. Finally a few years later I needed to sew something so I made the block in orange and black. Then another quilter said "It needs a head!" and since I give the people what they want, I figured out how to add one, big flappy ears and all.
You can use the Accordion Sewn HSTs™ method if you are familiar (links to the basic technique video are included, as well as hints on keeping the half square triangles in order) but you also can make your half square triangles in a more traditional way and still have success.
The result is a cute 17 1/2" unfinished block that even I, a Halloween disliker, can't resist. Make it into a pillow as shown, or a mini wall hanging, or even a candy bag!
